Summary Russia, primarily a peasant-agrarian society at the beginning of the twentieth century, was influenced by two main historical-cultural phenomena- the Obshchina and the Kolkhoz. A number of scientific papers not only historical but also dealing with broadly defined culture, geography and agriculture were used in research.This work is an attempt at comparison of the two systems of land tenure in twentieth century Russia. Part one discusses the historical and cultural conditions of the obshchina - a type of agricultural commune - which lasted relatively long until the Bolshevik coup during the Russian Revolution in 1917.
